Storage Bin
An airtight container that holds a working supply of green coffee at stable humidity.
Overview
A storage bin keeps the coffee you are actively roasting from drifting as the surrounding air changes. Airtight, opaque and easy to label, it turns loose bags into a managed inventory you can actually track.
Using it well
- Keep only a few weeks of working stock in the bin and the rest in sealed bags.
- Label the arrival date, not the purchase date. What matters is how long the coffee has been sitting.
- Never mix lots in one bin. You lose traceability immediately and gain nothing.
Do not store bins where they can be knocked over - spilled green coffee is a slip hazard. Keep bins out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources.
Why this matters
The storage bin sits in the charging stage of a roast. Getting it right removes one source of variation, which matters because roasting rewards consistency more than any single clever adjustment. Change one variable at a time, record what you did, and compare batches rather than judging any single roast in isolation.
If you are building a complete setup, start with the instruments that measure what is happening - a probe, a scale and a logger - before buying anything that promises a better result by itself. Measurement first, equipment second.

Specifications listed above describe typical ranges for the category rather than any specific model, and vary between manufacturers. Always follow the manufacturer instructions and safety documentation supplied with your equipment.
