Precision Scale
A scale accurate to 0.1 g for charge weights, yield checks and roast loss measurement.
Overview
Charge weight is the variable you control most precisely, and roast loss is the clearest single number describing what happened in the drum. A scale accurate to a tenth of a gram turns both into reliable data instead of estimates.
Using it well
- Weigh green charge to 0.1 g and roasted output to 0.1 g. The difference is your roast loss percentage.
- Compare roast loss batch to batch. A sudden shift usually means a change in green moisture or airflow.
- Check calibration with a known weight every few weeks, especially if the scale travels.
Keep the scale dry and away from the hot roaster. Heat warps load cells and destroys accuracy. Clean spills immediately.
Why this matters
The precision scale sits in the charging stage of a roast. Getting it right removes one source of variation, which matters because roasting rewards consistency more than any single clever adjustment. Change one variable at a time, record what you did, and compare batches rather than judging any single roast in isolation.
If you are building a complete setup, start with the instruments that measure what is happening - a probe, a scale and a logger - before buying anything that promises a better result by itself. Measurement first, equipment second.

Specifications listed above describe typical ranges for the category rather than any specific model, and vary between manufacturers.
