Roaster Cleaner
A dedicated detergent formulated to lift roasted coffee oil from drum and housing surfaces.
Overview
Coffee oil polymerises onto hot metal and builds up into a hard, bitter-smelling varnish. A cleaner formulated for coffee oils breaks that layer down without damaging the drum surface, keeping airflow correct and preventing old-roast flavours bleeding into new batches.
Using it well
- Clean when warm, not hot. A warm drum releases oil more readily; a hot one burns the cleaner on.
- Clean the exhaust path as well as the drum. Oil builds in ducting and is a fire risk.
- Run a throwaway batch after a deep clean if any cleaner smell lingers.
Cleaning chemicals must be fully rinsed before the machine is used again. Wear gloves and eye protection, work in ventilated space, and never mix cleaners. Follow the product label exactly - this guidance is general, not a substitute for it.
Why this matters
The roaster cleaner sits in the cupping & cleaning stage of a roast. Getting it right removes one source of variation, which matters because roasting rewards consistency more than any single clever adjustment. Change one variable at a time, record what you did, and compare batches rather than judging any single roast in isolation.
If you are building a complete setup, start with the instruments that measure what is happening - a probe, a scale and a logger - before buying anything that promises a better result by itself. Measurement first, equipment second.
Educational content. Roast Lab does not sell this or any other product, and we do not accept payment for coverage. Specifications listed above describe typical ranges for the category rather than any specific model, and vary between manufacturers. Always follow the manufacturer instructions and safety documentation supplied with your equipment.
