Cooling & Cupping

Cupping Bowl Set

Standardised ceramic or glass bowls used for tasting and scoring coffee consistently.

Used during: Cupping & Cleaning

Overview

Cupping bowls exist so that sensory evaluation is comparable between people, sessions and locations. Uniform size, shape and material keep the tasting conditions constant, which is the only way a score means anything.

Best suited to
Anyone evaluating coffee seriously, whether for buying, quality control or learning.

Using it well

  • Label the underside, not the rim. Ink near the lip contaminates the aroma you are judging.
  • Preheat bowls with hot water before adding the coffee and water. A cold bowl drops your brew temperature.
  • Keep the dose and water volume identical across every bowl or the comparison is invalid.
Safety considerations

Bowls are filled with near-boiling water. Place them on a stable surface, warn people nearby, and never carry a full bowl across a busy space.

Why this matters

The cupping bowl set sits in the cupping & cleaning stage of a roast. Getting it right removes one source of variation, which matters because roasting rewards consistency more than any single clever adjustment. Change one variable at a time, record what you did, and compare batches rather than judging any single roast in isolation.

If you are building a complete setup, start with the instruments that measure what is happening - a probe, a scale and a logger - before buying anything that promises a better result by itself. Measurement first, equipment second.
