Roast Profile Software

Applications that record, visualise and compare roast curves in real time.

Used during: Development

Overview

Profile software takes the raw signal from your probes and turns it into the familiar curve of bean temperature over time, alongside rate of rise and event markers. The real value is comparison: overlaying roasts makes small divergences obvious at a glance.

Roasters moving from intuition to data-driven iteration.

Using it well

  • Mark events live, not from memory afterward. A first crack logged ten seconds late distorts your DTR.
  • Compare like with like - same coffee, same charge weight, same ambient conditions - before drawing conclusions.
  • Rate of rise is more informative than temperature alone. A flattening RoR late in the roast is the classic warning sign.
Safety considerations

The software runs on a computer near hot equipment. Keep the machine well clear of the roaster, protect cables, and never let a laptop sit on or beside a hot drum.

Why this matters

The roast profile software sits in the development stage of a roast. Getting it right removes one source of variation, which matters because roasting rewards consistency more than any single clever adjustment. Change one variable at a time, record what you did, and compare batches rather than judging any single roast in isolation.

If you are building a complete setup, start with the instruments that measure what is happening - a probe, a scale and a logger - before buying anything that promises a better result by itself. Measurement first, equipment second.
